Millennials & Entrepreneurship

Is it just me or does it seem to be a super busy time of year for everyone? Through the college I work at I’ve hosted three major events and two small ones in the last two months, but I know I’m not the only person out there with a lot on their plate. It seems like everyone’s been busy with something, and I like it. It reminds me that I’m not the only one out there with a fuller than full calendar, and it motivates me to just buck up and get things done.

Even though everyone’s been busy with work, side projects, and a social life, I’ve had a lot of great chats with a couple girlfriends of mine. The three of us are in our twenties and lately we’ve been shooting the shit a lot about our current jobs and education, and where we’d like to see ourselves in the next few years and later on down the road.

I think one of the biggest trends with us millennials is that a lot of us dream of owning our own business. Gone are the days of getting a job at 18 and keeping it until retirement. We find a place we like, work there for 2-3 years, and then move onto something else. I feel the reason we’re always looking for something new and exciting is because we know there’s a world of opportunity out there waiting for us, and we don’t want to miss anything because we’ve been stuck behind a desk at the same job for twenty years. Being the boss of your own business brings you closer to those opportunities. When you’re running the show, you can do whatever you want! You can expand into other products and services if you’d like to, you can travel to source product or meet with clients, and you can set your own office hours and schedule more time for family, friends, or even just yourself.

Having a business to call your own seems to be a goal for a lot of us, which is great because that means there’s a network of people in the same boat who can bounce ideas off one another and motivate each other. One of my girlfriends just told me she was interested in starting a unique athletics wear clothing line and it was hard for me to contain my excitement. I was happy because when she told me her ideas, I could tell how passionate she was about this clothing line, and I can tell this is something she’d be great at. I was also happy because I was honored she felt she was able to confide in me about something so close to her heart. She asked for advice and I was more than willing to put in my two cents (okay, more like a dollar).

I love talking to people about their dreams and helping them get excited about the possibilities surrounding them. That’s the whole reason I created Strategic Charm Boutique; to help bloggers and business owners realize their full potential while helping them create marketing and promotional strategies that can help them succeed. Running your own blog or business is a TON of work and sometimes you don’t understand how much until you dive in. A lot of people get discouraged early on because there’s just so much to take in and they feel obligated to do everything themselves as if reaching out for help is a sign of failure. Knowing what your strengths and weaknesses are, and being realistic about how much time it takes to accomplish what you set out to do is one of many keys to success. Sometimes you need to hire someone to handle certain aspects of your business so you have time to focus on what you do best.

Marketing is essential to any blog or business, but you might not have the time or the knowledge to come up with and carry out a plan that gets you the results you need. I may have started this story talking about how busy I’ve been these last few weeks, but I always make time for my clients.
